Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency

  • Darker skin pigment.
  • Malnutrition.
  • Kidney or liver failure, which prevents the body from adequately processing vitamin D.
  • Certain medications.
  • Certain types of cancer, such as lymphoma.
  • A family history of vitamin D deficiency or childhood rickets.
  • Not enough exposure to sunlight

Medications cause a vitamin D deficiency

  • Laxatives
  • Steroids : Prednisone
  • Cholesterol lowering agents : Cholestyramine, Colestipol
  • Seizure-control drugs : Phenobarbital, Phenytoin
  • A tuberculosis drug : Rifampin
  • A weight-loss drug : orlistat

If you have vitamin D deficiency, you should take the proper dosage of vitamin D under doctor supervision, exposure to sunlight and increase intake of food containing vitamin D.
